Runway Recap: MBFW Fall/Winter 2014

The streets are buzzing with the latest trends as style setters venture out in this seasons best. That's right folks, it's Fashion Week! Bloggers, celebrities, and the like are gathered around the city to view the new-new on the runway; and I must say, I'm rather impressed. 

So ... To kick off the first few days into the F/W 2014 runways, I have composed some of my favorite collections below:

Veronica Beard

This collection screamed my dark fairytale. Simple and classic looks dawned this lookbook, with beautiful floral prints and textured fabrics alike, in lush autumn colors and pops of blue. A very wearable sportswear collection, that could easily be mixed and matched to merge an emotional story through dress.

Mara Hoffman

Hoffman never ceases to impress with her intricately designed prints in simple silhouettes. I loved all things maxi from the designer, in bold blues and neutrals in her beautifully engineered prints. The designer stepped away from the high necklines of most presentations, which was rather refreshing in retrospect. 

Lisa Perry

Oh, hello mod fashion, how I've missed you! This collection added a big punch of character to the runway with the shapeless boxy silhouettes and understated tones and prints. Did I mention how dimensional and symmetrical the collection looked [[without being overbearing?]] I loved how easy these looks were, and how they could easily be paired with all things basic.

 Calla

A rather fun and young collection! Calla got wearable sportswear to a T. With her color based print mixing, soft tribal and floral prints, and easy pieces. I rather appreciated this modern take on today's hipster- pretty conservative elements brought together through layering and subtle mixing.

 Marissa Webb

Last but not least, a bold collection presented by the namesake brand, Marissa Webb. I loved how understated this collection was - tonal whites, grey's, and blacks in mixable pieces. The simple looks have a common theme, high or exaggerated necklines. (And I adore it!) Not to mention that I need every item from this presentation in my possession, like yesterday!

Be sure to be on the lookout for more trends on the runway- I know I'm starting to see some definite similarities in this seasons collections!

Spring Showers bring MBFW 2014

Well since this blog has ultimately become seasonal, naturally I'll post about Fashion Week. As in the Spring '14 collections of MBFW. And let me tell you how much I love love loved all the colors, after all it is cooling down in this big old city. Which is rather disappointing considering my immense love for pairing mismatching colors on a daily basis. Anyways, I present my top 5 picks ... for now at least.

Mara Hoffman

Prints on prints on prints. I must say this is by far my most favorite collection. Mara Hoffman definitely has a knack for producing the most vivid and intricate designs in her tile like prints. Kudos to the tribal lady. Her collections never fail with the unique prints in very simple and wearable silhouettes. LOVE.

Nicole Miller

Yet another ode to prints. See the pattern, y'all. [[Get the pun there? I just can't stop.]] I love the dual printed stripes and watercolor florals paired back to solids and more prints. Blue tends to be my least favorite color on the palette, but I found this collection rather refreshing paired back to whites and pastels. 

Rebecca Minkoff

Layers for days. Talk about the funnest and youngest collection yet. I loved how vibrant the colors were paired with beautifully engineered prints in an array of materials. Individual pieces combined together to make a look far from simple.  

Zimmerman

By far the prettiest and daintiest collection of them all. The soft neutral colors paired with the picturesque florals makes me want to gather some girls for a high tea. In all honesty, I love the plunging necklines, lace up crop tops and metallics for day. 

Diane Von Furstenberg

Talk about wearable art, one thing I admire about DVF, is her ability to make beautiful garments that easily transitions from work to play. Easy flowy silhouettes, bold tribal prints, and a multitude of colors. Her collections always have a soft place in my heart.

Sorry to keep it short & sweet kids, I do have a life after all.

NYFW Recap One

So it's my favorite biannual time of year, Fashion Week. Which means the b*tches of the town are in full force across New York City [and I'm way underdressed - No Big Deal.] But it also means there's tons of beautiful frocks and inspiration by the hour donning the runway.

The top contender thus far definitely goes to Veronica Beard. With layering to the max, and easy neutrals paired with warm hues- what more could you ask for... More importantly when can I buy the EXACT outfit in the middle? Love it.

Theres a special place in my heart for the easy yet edgy feel of the Gryphon collection. I love how they mastered a jewel toned palette by pairing it with fur stoles. Casual yet chic.

Kate Spade brought an unusual pop of color, reminiscent of the taxi cabs lining these busy streets. The bright and bold looks paired perfectly with oversized bows, textured fabrics, and leopard inspired prints.

 The Juicy Couture collection was super wearable, [[unfortunately I didn't love how spring-y it turned out.]] Don't get me wrong I love everything about what they brought to the table with the coated denim, placed prints superimposed on stripes, and bold slogans across their tees. But I got chills thinking about wearing rolled up jeans this season.

The ease of this seasons Organic by John Patrick collection reminded me of how much I look forward to viewing his line up every season. And I must say he never ceases to amaze me. The neutral based runway was comforting in large oversized sweatshirts {don't you love that hot pink frock?} and form fitting skirts.

Kelly Wearstler definitely brought on the prints, and man did she layer them well. I love how consistent she is with bringing a certain level of sophistication to an otherwise edgy collection. The distressed denims, textured tweeds, and coated bottom weights were equally yummy.

There has been a special place in my heart for Rebecca Minkoff, ever since I purchased my first M.A.C. purse last fall. Not to mention that I've loved her collections for the past few seasons! The models were styled so effortlessly in this collection with the heavy textured tweeds, printed bottom weights, and form fitting garments.

A bit removed from my taste, but Tess Giberson brought a level of edge that I was super comfortable with. It may be the layering of differing textures, or the fact that everything looked so cozy. But for once, I must admit that I'm not against the [pretty much] all over black collection.

I may be a New Yorker and will never admit this again, but there's nothing about wearing all black everything that I admire. Naturally, thats why my top picks had minimal amounts of black, admittedly I am a spring person. [Give me color.] 

Give me too much black- complete turn off. Thanks winter, I officially hate you.

#FNO 2012

Last night was by far one of my best Fashions Night Out since moving to this busy city. Beyond the crazy crowds, the stores along 5th and Madison were booming with music, fun drinks and yummy appetizers.

Some friends and I ventured from the likes of Free People to Michael Kors and concluded our night at Saks ( which in itself was crazy)

Te night was a true tribute to my childhood, complete with face painting, temporary tattoos and henna. Did I mention I got to meet one of my all time favorite designers, Rebecca Minkoff?!?!?

NYFW Top 5

Ok, by 5 I mean 4, as of now. Hopefully the concluding shows of Fashion Week will really wow me. But as of now i must highlight my faves of the season.

Alice & Olivia (via Style.com)

One Word: Refreshing
Compared to the lull of whites, overly pastel, and neutral collections evident all over the runway, Alice & Olivia really put their best foot forward in the development of this collection. Although soft, the colors are way vibrant, each look is beautifully styled, and just as equally simple.

Look 1 is beautifully paired with the hues of mint blue and poppy yellow- easily a work ensemble easily taken to cocktails after work. Look 2 is clean and refined with a pretty basic clean white boat neck dress with a hint of charcoal black peaking through at the hem. Look 3 is ultimate 70's chic- A tonal vibrant red placement print seems bold against this rose colored floor length dress. Look 4 is so on trend its absolutely ridic - a salmon blazer over a poppy yellow bow front crop top and the perfect cerulean HIGH waisted pant.

All i can say is I love this collection, and the beautiful color palette, kudos to you Stacey Bendet.

 

Jen Kao (via Style.com)

A safari meets the clean runways of Lincoln Center. I commend Kao on her experimentation with prints and colors; they make sense in a nonsensical way- kind of like Dr.Seuss (but that's another discussion.) The colors evident in most pieces were toned perfectly thus that each look didn't look to cray with all the zig zags, checkerboards, striping, and sporadic placements. 

Look 1 so subtely makes sense, it lack much explanations- a printed tank, pencil skirt, and kimono style paired layered with novelty laced pieces strategically engineered on top. Look 2 is a different story, grunge meets brooklyn street style, a grey sharkbite tank is paired with printed shorts and tiered fly away ( or maybe its a scarf, whose to say???) Look 3 really speaks to my girdle - i adore the combination of the printed short and high-low crop top.

Although a little cray-cray i think these looks are definitely wearable, well for those that dare.

L.A.M.B (via Style.com)

The return of the serene rocker.

G.Stef def put her thinking cap on when producing this collection. It's like the introduction of the serene rocker, provided that that's not too much of a DOUBLE NEGATIVE. The collection displayed a variety of easy separates, via two tone prints and simple silhouettes.

Look 1 is the NSFW type of outfit that could easily be paired with some solid stockings to soften it up for the workplace. Look 2 is my understanding of sex, give me a big bold tie-dyish print paired with textured leather any day and I'm set. Look 3 is just simple, i think it's really the messy bun and model's facial expression that do it for me. Look 4 is a stroll in the park, I may not be a fan of onesies, or rompers, or whatever the updated footed pajama is, but this look is easily wearable. (Except for the fact that it is two separate pieces and I just JEDI mind TRICKED you.)

Word.

So last but not least, I present:

Prabal Gurung (via Style.com)

They always taught us to put a strong piece at the end of our portfolio, and that's exactly how I feel about Prabal Gurung's collection. Talk about WEARABLE ART, ok maybe to fancy parties only, but still. Purple used to be my favorite color, and I always find it makes the boldest statement in any runway piece, especially on the right body and in the right tones. Hello perfection, it's found for this season. But more importantly theres feathers, tons and tons of feathers, or something favoring feathers on like 3 looks, it's really nbd.

But really since there's nothing shiny and sparkly that says cha-ching, I'll take feathers.
